Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba relationship will improve if THIS

That’s the view of pundit Martin Keown, who saw Mourinho stick by the midfielder during United’s Champions League victory over Juventus in midweek.

Pogba was struggling against his former club in Turin but Mourinho did not substitute him.

It comes just weeks after the Portuguese boss stripped Pogba of his captaincy role at Old Trafford amid rumours of a falling out.

The Frenchman has struggled to impress since returning to Manchester United for £89million in 2016.

But Keown believes he can thrive as long as Mourinho continues to back the World Cup winner.

“Paul Pogba’s display against Juventus was his worst of the season,” Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.

“He struggled on an emotional return to Turin, losing the ball 18 times, more than anyone.

“He must have wondered when his number was going to come up but, crucially, Jose Mourinho stuck by him.

“Instead of hauling him off, Mourinho let him share in what must have been United’s most satisfying display in Europe since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

“Keep supporting him like this and their relationship is sure to improve.

“Should Pogba shrug off his minor niggle and play on Sunday, he will be determined to be United’s match-winner, as he was when scoring twice in the 3-2 triumph against City at the Etihad in April.”

When asked after the game whether a return to the reigning Serie A champions is possible, Paul Pogba said: “Who knows? I’m with United now.

“There is so much talk about this, but am happy to be playing for Manchester United.

“It was wonderful coming back here, although it felt weird going into the ‘away’ locker room. I was so accustomed to the Juve one.

“The reaction of the fans really moved me, as I missed them and Italian football.

“It was great to be back in this stadium, where I started out and won big trophies.”
