The incident happened about 6.20pm on Friday, about 300 metres from the summit.
“The paraglider landed about 100 metres into dense bush which required 4×4 vehicles to reach,” police said.
Firefighters were assisting police and brought in a high-ropes team to help access the paraglider.
The man’s body was recovered by a team of emergency services personnel shortly after 8.30pm.
Police said the paraglider was the only one flying at the time.
Police were seeking any witnesses to the crash.
Anyone who had photos or video footage of the crash was asked to contact the Tauranga Police.
