A day after beating world No 3 German Simon Rösner in the quarterfinals Coll was unable to repeat the dose against Egyptian world No 2 Ali Farag.

Supported by a vocal home crowd, Farag was too strong throughout, claiming an 11-4, 11-4, 13-11 victory in 47 minutes.

Coll, the 26-year-old from Greymouth, was unable to settle into his rhythm, and only a late comeback in the third game gave him a chance of taking the match any further.

Despite the loss, Coll’s efforts in Cairo have pushed him towards another career-high world ranking, having already reached that mark in being No 7 on this month’s list.

His last three tournaments, all of which have been Platinum events, have now seen his finishes read semifinals, quarterfinals, quarterfinals.

Coll returns to New Zealand in the coming days and will play an exhibition series against world No 11 Diego Elias, of Peru, from December 13-19 in five locations around the country.
