Fabinho filled in at central defence in the Reds 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are all on the injury list at Liverpool, forcing Klopp to make the personnel change.
And Klopp now believes Fabinho has the credentials to to play the centre-back position on a more permanent basis if needed.
“He is a brilliant player and I am happy that he can play [defence] – it’s now pretty clear [that he can play in defence],” he said.
“It’s not like it came one attack after the other from Brighton.
“We had the ball most of the time, so then it makes sense to have a good footballer in that position.”
Brazilian Fabinho produced a game-saving block from Seagulls midfielder Pascal Gross in a match that Liverpool had previously become accustomed to dropping points in.
Klopp also spoke about the specifics in what Fabinho did well, citing Joe Gomez’s performance against Brighton earlier this season as similar.
“I think Brighton tried a little bit to bring the long balls and [Glenn] Murray around him,” the German added.
“That’s what they did, by the way, against Joe Gomez in the home game as well.
“He did well in these situations and with the ball it’s absolutely clear.
“He has a defending brain and can do it in different positions, it’s good.”
Mohamed Salah’s penalty secured the points for Liverpool on a dogged afternoon at the south coast side.
Salah’s goal was his 14th of the season, putting him level with Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick-Aubamyeang and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
City come up against Wolves on Monday evening, and will need a win if they’re to close the gap on their title rivals.
