Despite manufacturers claiming a model might have AEB, systems within the lineup can vary in effectiveness.
While all new Cerato models come with AEB and lane departure warning systems – crucial to achieving a modern five-star score – ANCAP will reduce its rating for Safety Assist and Vulnerable Road User Protection if the AEB system is unable to detect pedestrians and cyclists.
“We strongly encourage vehicles which offer collision avoidance technologies like AEB, however it’s important consumers are aware there can be differences in performance across brands, models and variants,” said ANCAP chief executive, James Goodwin.
Consisting of four models – S, Sport, Sport Plus and GT – the 2019 Cerato hatch and sedan range fell short of a five-star score in both S and Sport trim because the camera-based AEB lacked radar support found in Sport Plus and GT models, though it is available as a cost-option in both base vehicles.
“All variants offer autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support functionality, however the AEB system fitted to S and Sport variants offers reduced performance,” said Goodwin.
“Kia should be commended for offering an affordable vehicle which meets today’s demanding 5 star requirements and we would recommend consumers opt for a 5 star variant as they provide added safety benefit to all road users.”
ANCAP further added that the Cerato performed well in its protection of adult and child occupants, scoring 90 per cent and 83 per cent respectively.
